What would it take to create four new eco-friendly suburbs in the City of Launceston and increase the population by 15,000 people by 2040?

The City of Launceston 10 year Strategic Plan documents a forecast net growth in population of only 1500 people between 2025 and 2035.

paul mallett proposes that our city become more ambitious in growing our population and creating the built environment to support sustainable population growth. The application of 7 generation thinking would be key to this initiative. The goal would be to think about the planned population and supporting infrastructure 100-150 years into the future.

Po: Could the development of four new suburbs, 7,500 new passivhaus standard homes (see related concept), and civic infrastructure, attract 15,000+ additional people to our community in the next 15 years?

Po: Could we support the growth with a workforce of immigrants invited to settle in our city as they build it- in a manner similar to how previous state building initiatives (dams, roads, factories) were supported post WWII? In addition to the establishment of new homes/apartments the construction workforce would be equipped to support the retrofitting of existing housing stock to lift the energy rating (see related concept) and livability of the majority of homes in the community.

Po: Could a new suburb – one in each direction – one north, one south, one west, and one east of the city – be developed as model suburbs with eco-friendly features and connections to our CBD?

Po: Could we have a development strategy that balanced social and affordable housing with private new builds. A 1:5 formula or similar to ensure that 1 in every 5 homes/unit/apartments built would be social/affordable housing.

Po: Could we built medium to high density apartments in each new suburb to increase population density?

Po: Could we build the new suburbs using best practice in inclusion?

Po: Could we name these new suburbs:

  • Waterbank
  • Ironbark Plains
  • Greenwood
  • Blueleaf Cove
