What would it take to re-establish annual festivals to celebrate the children of the City of Launceston?
paul mallett supports the coordination and delivery of annual festivals in Launceston to celebrate our children.
Events like “Kid I am”, “Children’s Expo”, and “Festival of Kites” have all been well supported by the public when held in the City of Launceston.
paul believes community wide festivals with a specific focus on children are important events promoting social inclusion and cohesion, community engagement, and respect of diversity.
Po: Could the City of Launceston partner with local groups and charities to develop and deliver child centered festivals during Children’s Week each year. Themes could include:
- Festival of Flight – focusing on kites and paper airplanes (similar to the Launceston Together event held in October 2024)
- Festival of Boxes – focusing on engineering and design
- Festival of STEAM – focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics
- Festival of Creativity – focusing on the arts
Inspiration
paul mallett led Anglicare’s Communities for Children (CfC) Launceston Tamar Valley initiative from 2010-2017. The small but dedicated CfC team partnered with Council and local community groups to deliver the Launceston Children’s Expo in 2010, 2011, and 2013. Held during Children’s Week in October, and hosted at Launceston’s City Park and Albert Hall, the “free entry” events attracted thousands of families each year to participate in outdoor activities. Additionally, community, education and child focused businesses held stalls in the Albert Hall promoting services and supports for children and families.
