What would it take to establish an open-air gym on the river’s edge?
paul mallett advocates for the establishment of an open-air gym on the river edge. Launceston’s own version of Venice Beach Gym.
Imagine an undercover, open-air gym on kanamaluka/Tamar: fresh air, river light, and room to move — without the rain and wind. Inspired by the Greek palestra (a place for movement and social connection), this public space would anchor an Exercise Park network across Launceston, designed to get us moving, connect neighbours, and cut avoidable health costs.
Weather-sensing walls respond to conditions, shielding users when it’s wet or gusty while keeping the space open. The floor plan mixes free body-weight stations, low-impact resistance machines, stretch bays, and a walking loop, with clear wayfinding and lighting for early mornings and evenings. It’s free, accessible, and welcoming for all ages — prams, mobility aids, and beginners included — with programmed sessions led by local clubs and health partners.
The aim is simple: more daily movement, more social connection, fewer preventable injuries and chronic disease. A place you can drop into on your way past the river and leave feeling stronger, brighter, and part of something. Let’s build it — and make moving together the new Launceston habit.
