What would it take support more community gardens and improve healthy food access across the City of Launceston?
paul mallett advocates for an increase in the size, number and support for Launceston’s community gardens.
paul views healthy food access as a social justice and a public health priority. As former Newark Mayor, Cory Booker, said in 2011, “You can’t have a healthy city if people can’t get healthy food.” For paul, this is an upstream prevention strategy where resources are invested in tackling the root causes of health disparities instead of just treating sickness.
paul proposes:
- Resident groups, service clubs, and not-for-profits will be supported to transform identified underutilized council land into productive community gardens in low income neighbourhoods.
- Promoting expansion of school gardens, and supporting health fairs and cooking classes in communities.
- Support community building and inter-generational connection with children and adults collaborating in the gardens and cooking classes.
- Support food swaps and distribution of produce.
