What would it take to establish a successful ‘park and ride’ scheme in the City of Launceston?
paul mallett is an advocate for free park and ride schemes to be establish around the City of Launceston.
Po: Could the City of Launceston seek to establish facilities:
- East Tamar between Mowbray and Mayne Street opposite Faulkner Park
- West Tamar
- St Leonards/Waverley
- Kings Meadows
- Prospect
The elements of a “best in class” park and ride scheme would include:
- Strategic locations on major highways to outer suburbs
- Integrated with transport connections
- Real time information including signage and apps showing space availability, bus departure times and any delays
- Safe and accessible being well-lit, with CCTV and secure storage options (for bikes)
- Environmentally designed with solar panels, permeable surfaces to manage stormwater, and EV charging
- Integration with urban planning – being part of a broader transport strategy for the city
- Scalable being designed for future growth in size and use.
The environmental and commuter benefits of well planned and administered schemes include:
- Reduced inner city congestion
- Lower vehicle emissions – promoting cleaner air
- Saves time with less traffic congestion and reduces stress of city driving/finding parking
- Reduced parking costs
