What would it take to increase participation in community bike riding in the City of Launceston?
paul mallett strongly advocates for the City of Launceston to accelerate plans and implement strategies to make commuting and recreational riding safer in our region. paul believes local government has a key role in supporting the development of infrastructure and setting the conditions for more people to use active transport like cycling. The health benefits to individuals are widely understood, and the social and environmental benefits can be calculated to show a likely return on infrastructure investment.
paul will document here the list of priorities for the City of Launceston.
Inspiration
It has been through the strong advocacy efforts of the Bicycle Network of Tasmania and the Tasmanian Bicycle Council that safety issues for bicycle users has been raised with the State Government and action taken, particularly on safe passing distances and highway upgrades.
Furthermore, it is local groups such as Tamar Bicycle Users Group who continue to advocate for local council action on matters of concern to bicycle users. paul seeks to support these efforts and amplify the voices of bicycle users.
Please also see how paul’s commitment to issues of rider safety and bike security have been inspired by his own experience of cycling in Launceston, and a humorous look at paul’s commuter cycling experience.
